Amber Butler, from Teen Mom UK, has written a blog sharing her advice for telling your parents that you’re pregnant and her experience.
When I first told someone about my pregnancy, it was actually my best friend.
I was friends with her for years. I just feel with something like that, I feel like you need to tell the person who you want to tell and make sure it is the right person ‘cause that’s the first person you tell, the first person you’ll hear advice from and stuff like that.
Advice for telling your parents that you’re pregnant
Just be calm and be confident. If you’re ready to have a child, then you’re ready.
You go tell your parents that you’re ready to have this child, they should support you no matter what. I was really scared about telling my parents. They were the people obviously, out of everybody who I was more scared about but they’re my parents at the end of the day and all I thought was, ‘I’d like to keep this baby, I feel like I’m ready. I feel like I’m mature enough’ and stuff like that and if they don’t like it then they’re obviously not very supportive and you do know what? I was completely wrong. They was a bit jumpy at first you know, a bit shocked but then they were very supportive and I couldn’t have asked for more. They were very, very supportive.
You’ll know when the right time, make sure you’ve got enough time to actually process it yourself.
With me, I did do that, which I’m very happy about. It made me more confident about telling them. Take a little breath, take a little break and stuff like that. So I told my best friend at first, I had a couple of days break, then told my parents and I also told my boyfriend. The whole situation just felt more relaxed and calm and I feel with a big announcement like that you want it to be calm and relaxed, you don’t want it to be all over the place.
Be calm, relaxed and make sure you give yourself enough time to process what you’ve just found out yourself.
