After giving us her top tips on juggling work and parenthood and dealing with ‘working mum guilt’, Linda’s now talking about finding and managing child care as a single parent. Here’s what she says…

Here’s Linda’s advice in full if you can’t play the video:

Before I enrolled into uni, I had to sort my son’s child care, and even though I had the support of my friends and my family, they also work, they also had responsibilities. So I had to find a secure child care provider for my son, and that was scary.

The thought of leaving my son with people or someone I didn’t know was very daunting, but I knew it was something that I had to do.

So I initially asked for friends’ recommendations, but I ended up browsing through my local borough’s website for child care services.

The induction week that my son went for was really great, because seeing how he interacted with the other kids, and the things that he would be learning and how it would be a benefit to him really did help me [overcome] all my initial fears.

I think plan your child care beforehand; look into things such as:

  • Whether you want your child care provider to be within the area of your work place or your place of study
  • Whether you want it to be local to where you live
  • Whether you want it to be local to where your friends and family live, so that they can pick up your child after hours.
